Historical Event on 4/1/1935

The Reserve Bank of India was established as a Central Bank and the job of issuing notes was entrusted to this bank. The Commissioner's office which issued currency was abolished and was substituted by the Governer of the RBI. The issue offices scattered around the country came to be called as the regional offices of the Reserve Bank.

1/17/1889Shri Baldev Ramji Mirdha, great social worker, leader and politician, was born in village Kuchera, district Nagaur of Rajasthan.
4/4/1905More than 10,000 people are feared to have perished in an earthquake that hit the northeast Indian province of Lahore during the night. The town of Dharmsala was almost completely razed to the ground with the entire population rendered homeless and sleeping out in icy conditions. Five hundred Gurkha soldiers were buried alive when their stonebuilt barracks collapsed on them. The towns of Kangra and Palampur have also been leveled to the ground by the worst natural disaster measured at 8 on Ricter Scale. In Lahore, 70 Hindus were killed, Muslim inhabitants were parading in the streets, weeping and offering up prayers with ceremonial rites. Several British administrators and missionaries were known to have been killed or injured. At Simla, Lady Curzon, wife of the Viceroy, had a close escape from death when a chimney crashed into the room in which she was sleeping.

3/20/1920Usha Mehta, freedom fighter, was born at Satara. Her name is closely attached with freedom movement via Bombay Radio, as she and Babubhai Prasad and Vitthalbhai Zaveri founded this Radio and started motivating people of India with their telecasts.
1/9/1922Har Gobind Khurana, scientist of Biology, was born in India. He did his M.Sc from University of Punjab and, for higher education went to University of Liverpool. In 1959, he produced a chemical called ""Coenzymea"", which is essential for certain processes in the human body. He was awarded Nobel Prize for medicine in 1968 along with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Halley.
9/11/1921Subramania Bharati, freedom fighter, Tamil poet and editor, passed away at an early age of 39.
