First Lok Sabha was formed. Ananthasaynam Ayyangar, was elected as the first Deputy speaker of Lok Sabha (1952).

11/19/1838Keshab Chandra Sen (1838-84), nationalist leader of Bengal, was born in Calcutta. He was one of the first Indians to sow the seeds of secularism in the country. He joined the Brahmo Samaj in 1857 but seperated from it in 1866 and founded Brahma Samaj of India, a radical offshoot of the Adi Brahmo Samaj.
4/1/1889Hindu', English language newspaper changed its perodicity from weekly (20/09/1888) to daily.
11/2/1976Lok Sabha passes the 42nd Constitution Amendment Bill making India a Socialist Secular Republic and laying down the fundamental duties of citizens.
8/9/1965Pakistan chose to persist while the Indian Army Corps on the ceasefire line got down to neutralizing the Gibraltar Force. As a first step, main infiltration routes were blocked and Pakistan was forced out of the Haji Fir bulge (known to them as Bedori).
1/4/1948Burma achieved its independence from Great Britain. In 1989, Burma changed its name to Myanmar to reflect the multi-ethnic composition of the country. Apart from the Burmese, the main ethnic minority groups are the Karen, Shan, Mon, Chin, and Kachin. Just as the Burmese did against the British, almost all of these ethnic groups have struggled against the Burmese government for self-determination.
